Innovative Research in Collaboration with Nordic Iron Ore and Stockholm University

Iain Pitcairn, Associate Professor of Ore Deposit Geology at Stockholm University and a researcher at the Smart Exploration Research Centre, is involved in the exciting research project “MINREE – Magnetite as an Indicator Mineral in REE Deposits”.

The project, funded by Vinnova through the Impact Innovation Metals & Minerals program, explores whether the mineral magnetite can be used as an indicator to locate rare earth elements (REE) in the mineral-rich Bergslagen region.

Goals and Expected Results
The project analyzes trace elements and isotopes in magnetite from drill cores at Blötberget, with the aim of:

  • Identifying stratigraphic levels in complex mineralized areas.
  • Tracing REE deposits through the composition of magnetite.

The study could lead to the development of new tools for more effectively locating REE mineralization, which in turn could support sustainable mineral extraction and Sweden’s green transition.

The project is being carried out by Stockholm University in collaboration with Nordic Iron Ore and is part of Sweden’s commitment to sustainable innovation in metals and minerals.
